If you suffer from hip pain, you are not alone. Thousands of Americans suffer from hip joint pain, and many go undiagnosed or mistreated. Diagnosing hip joint pain can be tricky since there are so many different causes. That’s why it’s so important that the patient do their own research so that they are more able to help the doctor pinpoint the cause resulting in a more accurate diagnoses and treatment.

Some of the common causes of hip joint pain include:

  • Trochanteric Bursitis  causes inflammation of the bursa over the outside of the hip joint; and is very common in hip pain.
  • Tendonitis can occur in any of the tendons that surround the hip joint. Most common is iliotibial band (IT band) tendonitis.
  • Osteonecrosis occurs when blood flow to an area of bone is restricted. When blood flow is restricted the cells can die and the bone may collapse. The hip joint is one of the most common areas for Osteonecrosis.
  • Lumbar Pain such as back and spine problems can cause pain to the buttocks and hip area. The most common being herniated discs and sciatica.
  • Snapping hip syndrome refers to 3 distinct hip problems: The first is when the IT band snaps over the outside of the thigh. The second occurs when the deep hip flexor snaps over the front of the hip joint. The third describes the snapping sensation that occurs when the cartilage or labrum tears.
  • Muscle Strains around the pelvic and hip area can cause pain and spasms. The most common strains are groin pulls and hamstring strains.
  • Hip Fractures are often seen in patients with osteoporosis. Treatment of broken hips may require surgery to either replace the broken portion, or repair it with a metal plate and screws.
  • Stress fractures of the hip are most common in athletes that participate in high-impact activities. Treatment requires avoiding such high-impact activities.

Treatment for hip joint pain depends entirely on the cause of the problem. That is why it is so important for the patient to understand the cause of their symptoms before beginning a treatment plan. Always seek medical advice in diagnosing and treating hip pain.
